Junior Department

We begin the school journey with Early years pupils in Daffodil Class. As a school we are Early adopters of the EYFS framework.

Prime areas are fundamental, work together, and move through to support development in all other areas. Specific areas include essential skills and knowledge for children to participate successfully in society.

The Junior Department has 7 classes all named after flowers.

Daffodil class is where the youngest children join the school. The class is a self-contained space with its own soft play area, toilet, and playground. We follow an adapted early years curriculum and focus on the prime areas of: Communication and Language, Physical development and Personal and Social Development. It’s where we begin teaching our pupils the important skills of communication and play.

The other classes in Juniors are Buttercup, Bluebell, Rose, Tulip, Daisy, and Sunflower.

Throughout the junior phase of school, pupils continue to learn how to communicate, play and explore. Daily lessons focus on social play activities, songs, rhymes, and stories. We teach pupils when they are ready how to use symbols to communicate. We also start teaching them independent skills such as putting on their own coat, and how to manage their emotions.

Many of our pupils follow the Foundation curriculum. A few pupils start to access specific subject lessons such as early reading and early math. Please look at the curriculum section of the website for more details.

We have weekly assemblies, and special events for parents. Pupils are not yet ready to sit for long periods in the hall, so we make these events fun and informal.
